چکیده

A number of greedy algorithms are examined <and are shown to be probably inherently sequential. Greedy algorithms are presented for finding a maximal path, for finding a . maximal set of disjoint paths in a layered dag, and for finding the largest induced subgraph of a graph that has all vertices of degree at least Ic. It is shown that for all of these algorithms, the problem of determining if a given node is in the solution set of the algorithm is F-complete. This means that it is unlikely that. these sequential algorithms can be sped up significantly using parallelism. This research was supper ted in part by an IBM Faculty Development Award * Also supported in part by a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship

Greedy Givens algorithms for computing the rank-k updating of the QR decomposition

AGreedy Givens algorithm for computing the rank-1 updating of the QR decomposition is proposed. An exclusive-read exclusive-write parallel random access machine computational model is assumed. The complexity of the algorithms is calculated in two different ways. In the unlimited parallelism case a single time unit is required to apply a compound disjoint Givens rotation of any size. In the limi...

Mapping of synchronous dataflow graphs on MPSoCs based on parallelism enhancement

Multi-processor systems-on-chips are widely adopted in implementing modern streaming applications to satisfy the ever increasing computation requirements. To take advantage of this kind of platform, it is necessary to map tasks of the application properly to different processors, so as to fully exploit the inherent task-level parallelism and satisfy the stringent timing requirements. We propose...

Feature Clustering for Accelerating Parallel Coordinate Descent

Large-scale `1-regularized loss minimization problems arise in high-dimensional applications such as compressed sensing and high-dimensional supervised learning, including classification and regression problems. High-performance algorithms and implementations are critical to efficiently solving these problems. Building upon previous work on coordinate descent algorithms for `1-regularized probl...

An Iterated Greedy Algorithm for Flexible Flow Lines with Sequence Dependent Setup Times to Minimize Total Weighted Completion Time

This paper explores the flexile flow lines where setup times are sequence- dependent. The optimization criterion is the minimization of total weighted completion time. We propose an iterated greedy algorithm (IGA) to tackle the problem. An experimental evaluation is conducted to evaluate the proposed algorithm and, then, the obtained results of IGA are compared against those of some other exist...

Heuristic and exact algorithms for Generalized Bin Covering Problem

In this paper, we study the Generalized Bin Covering problem. For this problem an exact algorithm is introduced which can nd optimal solution for small scale instances. To nd a solution near optimal for large scale instances, a heuristic algorithm has been proposed. By computational experiments, the eciency of the heuristic algorithm is assessed.
